Austral also built these with four door cabs. The two-door configuration tended to slow down crew access and egress ro and from the cab, and did not offer any advantages. Quite a lot of UK fire trucks in the 1950s and 1960s also had two door cabs, aome with sliding or bi-fold "bus" doors, but these also died out. The only other country to favor two-door crew cabs at that time was Finnland - but I have no idea why!

Austral never built these with 4 doors , it went under in 1999 and varley took over its production the following year with the commander which is basically a 4 door firepac but with engine and transmission options , I posted a full account on here No: 5550

The four door Varley certainly quacked like the two door Austral duck! I wonder if they might have survived if the original had been a four door?
