Thanks Joel, I think these trucks serve a good purpose. Not every fire needs a 75 to 135 foot ladder rig.

Boston Fire Dept are famous for their use of ground ladders and will think nothing of laddering one side of a building with 50 ft ladders for access etc

Interesting that these "city service ladder truck" designs are still being placed into service in Chile. They were invented more than 100 years ago in North America. But they started to disappear in the 1930s, when they were often combined with an aerial ladder, and became virtually extinct by the 1950s.

The Escaleras de Bomberos, or Ladder Firemen of Chile are well versed in the use of ground ladders and these rig's also carry basic vehicle extrication equipment. There's several videos on you-tube of these crews in action, truly impressive.

Chile are plagued with narrow streets and little or no room for aerials, hence the use of ground ladders
