The two rear crew seats are cleverly configured to allow the ladder's elevating chain wheels to rotate, but they also look extremely uncomfortable. Quite an incentive to get a promotion and become the squad leader, sitting in the comfort of the cab!

But they are still probably a lot better than just standing there and holding on to the ladder - which was what crew members on most TLs in other countries were having to do in 1939.
