The chopped-up Mercedes production line panel van body weighed less than a custom body on a factory chassis with crew cab.

This made it possible to install a 1200 liter water tank along with the crew and equipment load, while custom-built units were limited to 1000.

Both types were also occasionally supplied as 4X4, but this too added to the unladen weight and tended to compromise payload.

There were Vario water tenders which had an 1, 800 liter tank, but these were limited to three crew and had meager equipment loads.
