Bedford AFS bus UYK961

I found this parked in a side street in deepest Gloucestershire. Clearly it has been converted for a more 'nomadic' role in recent years but does anyone know the history. Does it appear to be in AFS livery because it's been built on an ex Green Goddess chassis or was it built as it still almost appears here please?

Just had a very quick look through "The Green Machine" book, didn't see anything listed with that reg number.

It does not appear to have an original Green Goddess
registration number.Looking at the sidelights it is probably an early Bedford S type, a 2 wheel drive not a 4x4.

Here is the answer chaps : from classic comm, ercials forum:Bedford C4 UYK961
Bedford motor home UYK961 seen at Strumpshaw on May 29th 2011, part of a display from Rougham airfield. The mollycroft clerestory roof is a later addition. (Dave Gothard) #1

Clive Williams writes ... 1959 Bedford C4Z1 UYK961, chassis no 3576 with Dennis B30F body, new to London County Council as school bus no 3039. Withdrawn and sold in 1969.

It seems to have been a traveller's vehicle for many years, and it is alleged to have been fitted with RL axles. Whether this means that RL axles have been fitted to the C4Z1 chassis or that the the whole Dennis body and Bedford front end have been dropped on to an RL I don't know, but the reg number relates to a Bedford C4. It retains its headlamps at the C or S height and is not fitted with RL 4WD type lights.

UYK961 was one of a number of Bedford C4Z1/Dennis B30F acquired by London County Council as school buses, all of which passed to the Greater London Council on its formation in 1965.

The full range of registration and fleet numbers was:
UYK955-962 (LCC fleet nos 3033-3040),
VLF210, 211 (3041, 3042),
WXX502-511 (3052-3061),
WXX512, 513 (3064, 3065),
YXW581-588 (3074-3081).

All were new between 1959-1961 and were withdrawn by the GLC between 1969-1973

Odd, the ride height, hubs, and single rear wheels suggest 4x4, but front wings / light placement is more 2 wheel drive (but still not as the usual 4x2 Goddesses. The grille has the much later chrome surround. The coach work looks very good, i'm not sure this would of been a rebuilt Green Goddess.

Michael my post gives you all there is to know about this bus. never a GG built for the LCC as a 4x2 bus. later either new 4x4 axles or complete chassis change by travellers into 4x4. !

Ted, thanks, i'd written and submitted my post this morning, before your reply was posted! So I didn't realise that you had already explained!

Thanks for the information, it's a shame that other than the livery there's no relation to the AFS or any other fire brigade but thanks again guys

I would like to know more about the C4 and C5 chassis bodied as PSVs - for example, does anyone know what the "Z1" and "Z2" notation means, please?

Added by Nigel Furness on 29 March 2015.
Z refers to chassis only (ie supplied in chassis form for body to be built by coach builder) 1 is with 300 diesel engine, 2 with 214 petrol engine & 3 would be 300 petrol.

Would have looked like this one before the 'mods'
