1954 Maxim Old Melrose Mass. Eng. 4

Look what I found. Shot on October 14, 2012, this 1954 Maxim was spotted as I drove by a Cranberry Bog farm in Kingston Mass. The owner and Cranberry farmer was kind enough to let me photograph it, and I didn't have the heart to ask him to remove the pumpkin. It is kind of a nice fall touch.

This old Maxim really illustrates the difference between American and European fire trucks sixty years ago.

Conventional control, open cab, crew standing on the rear step, almost all items of equipment out in the open - pretty much unchanged from the first motorized pumpers introduced fifty years earlier!

Compare it to a 1954 Dennis F12. Fully enclosed four door forward control cab with everyone sitting inside, all the equipment except the hose reels and ladders inside lockers - all pretty much the same as today!

I believe this used to be Engine 3 stationed on East Forster Street in Melrose. It was renumbers 4 when it was replaced with a Mach. I remember hearing the engine and the Q-siren behind my childhood home. Great to see a picture of it. Thank you.
