Nice example of how rural departments here facilitate access to open water by installing dry hydrants at the side of the road, making it far faster and safer than trying to get the suction directly in to the water. As the piping is well below the lake surface, it also means easy access to the water, even when the lake has several inches of ice on the surface in winter - which often happens in Northern Illinois.
Dave - lake filling is often helped by rainfall, which has been a bit scarce in Illinois this summer, but you don't often see departments actually adding water.
The crew can make water, of course, but usually not enough to make a big difference. Maybe its a reason so many of our trusty volunteers tend to drink so much beer?
