Front mounted pumps had many advantages, and were very popular in central and northern Europe for many years up to the 1960s, as well as being very common on commercial chassis fire pumpers in the Americas - not to mention being a highly distinctive feature of the famous Ahrens-Fox brand!
But their exposure to accident damage was a major drawback, fancy bumper guards notwithstanding...
