Magirus-Deutz 170 series. Nothing DAF about it. Probably isn't Magirus bodywork - looks Rosenbauer or Dutch to me. The amber beacon probably means that it was an airfield appliance.

I know amber lights are a feature of airport vehicles and a number of our local ambulances here have them and I assume it is for that purpose but I have seen a few photos of Durch appliances with such beacons that appear to be urban rather than airfield but it could well be an airfield connection...thanks

The amber beacon is standard on all Dutch appliances. In The Netherlands they use it as a obstruction light. The Dutch government set up rules regarding the use of blue lights. At a emergency scene one unit can use the blue lights, the other (including Police and Ambulance) turn on their amber lights. The Government thinks people are less distracted from amber than blue?

The Magirus Deutz looks like it is a former Rotterdam Fire brigade unit. Bodywork is from Motorkracht-Magirus but I also see a Doeschot-Rosenbauer logo on it. Not quite sure what the license plate is, but it looks like with 71-41-J?. If the last digit is B at the end it's probably a 1975 built Magirus Deutz 170D11. Perhaps my friend Frank can help us out.

It is one of the Rotterdam firebrigade Magirus Deutz engines(1976-1986). The Coat of Arms of Rotterdam is positioned on the front door and also the roofconstruction of the sirenes is typical for Rotterdam. 71-41-JB is the correct licence plate. The truck is probably exchanged by Doeschot-Rosenbauer, that will explain the Doeschot logo.

This design was first launched in 1965 or 1966. Glasgow was the first UK brigade to buy one in 1967. I think it is amazing how modern these Magirus pumpers still look after all these years. Unfortunately, Magirus was absorbed in to IVECO and lost their identity (along woth their unique air-cooled V6 and V8 diesel engines)- but they still build aerial ladders and platforms, which are used in many far-flung countries.

Where was this Engine stationed after his Servicetime in Rotterdam. the number 542 was not tipical for Rotterdam.

My friend Frank told me this:
"This is the Magirus Deutz 170D12F (license plate 71-41-JB) built in 1975. It was in service from 1976 until 1986 with the Rotterdam fire department. It was based at the old Rotterdam Prins Alexanderpolder Fire station with call sign TAS 117. Pump capacity 2850 l/m low pressure, 400 l/m high pressure. Watertank 1350 litres water, 150 litres foam concentrate. Delivered in dayglow red but later transferred to a normal red colour. After tis carreer with the Rotterdam Fire dept. it was sold to Smit Fire, Later it was donated to a English museum in in South Yorkshire. It seems to be in private hands now."

Perhaps the 542 isnt't 542 but S42 from Smit Fire 42?
