European apparatus do not appear to have any unit markings on them. How does the incident commander identify his assets?

Jerry, All pumping appliances are similar.....they carry 400 gallons of water and a pump, 5 sets of SCBA sets and similar equipment.....special appliances such as aerials, water tankers emergency or rescue tenders are very distinctive in design so marking them is not really necessary

There is usually a station name or call sign somewhere on the machine, often a removable sign in a cab window. Lancashire did remove all identification for a short time in the 80s, until one staion took the wrong machine home.

Hey Jerry, the description says this pump is an "ex" Derbeyshire FRS, so probably now owned by an enthusiast. British designations are often subtle but most counties appliances will have some markings. Hampshire I know has numbers above the front grill, similar to some US trucks I have seen. Neal: This reminds me of the stolen police patrol car, which disappeared from a police station in Kuwait, only to turn up at a different station a few days later! (At that time, all their police cars were American Ford Crown Victoria sedans, with a very distinctive blue, yellow and white paint job.)
