These Somati Bedfords were quite popular in Belgium in the 1970s.

I have seen a lot of photos of them, and they always seem to have the B pillar unpainted - or was this a mesh panel?

TKs found their way into fire service fleets in dozens of countries, but these Somatis appear to be the only ones with this feature.

Does anyone know why?

Better engine cooling when pumping ? The TK engine was set well back below the seats, like you say though no one else seemed to have a problem.
