Modeled on the Steyr G Wagen 4X4, it is not clear what this was used for. I have not been able to figure out the device attached to the front bumper.

Is it a winch of some sort?

Rob,
I think the Mahindras have no connection to the Steyr G, this would be Tata who built/build? Mercedes (Puch) G in license as they did/do with Mercedes trucks.

I think the thing on the front bumber is a siren, the cables leading to it look too thin for a winch, IMHO.

Martin - I agree that it is probably a siren of some sort.

As far as the origins of this vehicle are concerned, I already did know that Mahindra did not build the G Wagen under license, but - having dealt with Indian automotive companies when I was in Kuwait - I do believe that many of their design features were modeled on the G, as I said, although their vehicle was also a bit smaller.

At the time, the Indian auto makers (with a few exceptions) were generally not very original - and their protective tariffs meant that many quite elderly designs continued in production for decades without any significant updates.

Based on our experience armoring versions of the Indian-built G Wagen kombi, I would also mention that their build quality also left quite a lot to be desired...
