The Europe-isation of UK's fire and rescue vehicles seems to be continuing at a pace, strangely irrespective of a looming Brexit. But then again, what choices do our vehicle procurers have these days?
We've had pumps with obvious continental DNA in Mid & North Wales for many years now, with appliances even sporting Martin-horns! But it seems that just as we prepare ourselves to slip the mooring rope that tethers us to Europe, and set off on our own journey, our fire & rescue services dabble ever deeper into our continental friends' offerings. I am of course talking about Rosenbauer, a firefighting equipment company that goes from strength to strength with its innovation and increased popularity. Their kit is becoming more and more commonplace on our shores, and is set to become a major player as other suppliers stagnate and fall ever further behind.
Lancashire have trialed the AT Stinger, and have been so impressed, they are buying the demonstrator, and have ordered another. Buckinghamshire -- famed for its eclectic, sometimes bizarre, but mostly unusual fleet -- have placed on-the-run a number of Rosenbauer AT pumps similar to the appliance above but on a MAN chassis. They look a little unwieldy and top-heavy to me, and have "low-speed-rollover" written all over them! Let's just Rosenbauer's much-acclaimed crew safety innovation does its job if, heaven forbid, one does do a Scottish CARP en-route to a shout.
As for my streets, the streets of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, they'll soon have a gang of distinctly German appliances doing the business too: Staffordshire have on order eleven Rosenbauer AT pumps, one each at every wholetime station, and one destined for training school, I shouldn't wonder. They will be similar to Buckinghamshire's and the above appliance, but mercifully, they will be built on the more capable Volvo FL chassis and not the MAN. Never had Volvos in the Staffs' fleet, and I have rarely had anything complimentary to say about any Volvo (Greater Manchester's fault!). Interesting times. But as the AT comes in two different widths and three different heights, I am just hoping they don't look as peculiar as the ones working the mean streets of Buckinghamshire -- appliances that put me in mind of those Trunki children's suitcases on wheels! Any pictures of a Rosenbauer AT would be nice if anyone's got any. Will definitely be posting some of Staffordshire's as soon as I get the opportunity to snap one -- deliveries commencing in Spring. Video clips can be found on YouTube. Check out Aylesbury's new acquisition. I would love to hear your thoughts...
