Berlin is one of very few German fire services which operate a full crew cab rescue squad truck, and this is it!

They decided to adopt this solution so as to make sure a full squad of extensively trained and well experienced specialist rescue personnel always accompanied the truck. This philosophy is similar to most US fire departments - and also reflects the practice in London and Paris.

Most other German services man a heavy rescue with only two or three, and rely on rescue pumper crews to know how best to use all of the equipment it carries.

The TECH I station where this truck is based is also home to several additional specialist rescue units. It houses no less than fifty rigs, containers and trailers, to handle every kind of rescue, hazmat, water relays and special risk fire incident in the city. A second TECH station has around twenty additional special purpose units, trailers, etc...

This rig now has a twin brother based at TECH II, as it has proved very effective. The two tech teams - numbering around thirty on each watch - have four roles, namely all kinds of rescues, hazmat incidents, foam/special fire risks and general special operations.

This variety of tasks involve very large numbers of highly specialized trucks, pods and trailers, but these two Rustwagen units are the core first response rigs to almost all such alarms.
