Marcel, when you say old fire house, do we take it that this fine looking building is no longer in use? Lovely station, it would be criminal if it's demolished to make way for more high rise buildings that surround it!

Hi Matt, it's no longer a operational Fire house. But I saw some other activities inside. So I don't think it will be demolished. I certainly hope not, it's a lovely building to see.

This picture actually shows the old quarters of Engine 31 at 87 Lafayette Street which was known as a double company, with a water tower attached and was one of the largest companies in the department.
In 1893, Engine Company 31 was housed in a former volunteer's building on Leonard Street, but the New York Life Insurance Company wanted the land to build office blocks. In exchange for the old firehouse property, the Insurance company offered the services of their architects as consultants and $83, 000 dollars to build a replacement, a sum of money then sufficient to creat three firehouses.
The City provided the new site, at Lafayette and White Streets, on the edge of what had been known as Collect Pond. The architects were Napolitan Le Brun & Sons who would later design the Metropolitan Life Insurance tower in Madison Square, Stanford White was the consultant.
Promising the department a showcase, they delivered in 1895 an Indiana limestone chateau in the French Reanaissance Electric style building. The building had three doors big enough for the 17 horses to charge out for the apparatus and housed around about 30 men under the command of Captain Smoky Joe Martin
Stalls across the rear of the apparatus space had doors that opened automatically as the fire bell rang. The dormered exterior design included a romantic tower masking a shaft with which the hoses were hung to dry, but also the generous interior allowed for conversion to use with mororized equipment in 1912.By 1919, the company was one of the largest in New York and operated two motor high-pressure hose cars, with turret pipes, there was one steamer, a first-size Lafrance drawn by a Christie tractor, and a water tower which was a Hale 65ft tower, with large deck pipe, and drawn by a four-wheel tractor.
This firehouse was given the title by the Fire Department'The Finest Firehouse in the World'.In actual fact, Tour buses in Lower Manhattan once made regular stops before this wonder.
In 1966, the building recieved a landmark designation but by then it needed alot of work done on it and although the restoration and modernization was in the planning this was never undertaken by the fire department.Engine Company 31 moved out of this old firehouse in 1970 and the rest is history.

Engine 228 is still operating out of their 1891 firehouse, the oldest one in New York...
