A 1901 Horse drawn Steam Fire engine. This engine was built by La France Fire engine company Elmira NY. The coal fires engine could pump 700 gallons a minute. The last horse drawn steam fire engine went out of service in 1922.

Rather typical example of an American municipal steamer, these being introduced gradually between 1850 and 1880, and still produced in the first decade of the twentieth century. Silsby and American La France were two of the larger manufacturers.

Note the absence of crew accommodations and storage for hoses. Crew members rode (or ran) to the fire separately, and hoses were carried on mobile hose carts.

British steamers had a hose box, which also served as seating for crew members.
