This hand drawn hose reel was ran by the Steinway Hose Company no. 7 of the Long Island City Fire dept. This one was built in 1875.

These were used in conjunction with both manual and steam powered horse drawn pumps, which did not normally carry hoses on board. Some larger ones were pulled by a horse, while others were smaller hand carts on two wheels. Elaborate decoration like this example was commonplace, and reflected the pride which the volunteers took in their companies.
