AEC Mercury FoT
Following the fantastic shot from Mr Moore and with thanks to Malcolm Shepherd, here is NDC 646G prior to been written off after turning over I think on Seal Sands Road around 1980 enroute to one of the many industrial plants on Billingham's ground.
I believe there were no serious injuries to the crew.
West Riding operated two similar Carmichael appliances as Water Carrier's

This is in a bit of a state. It's also the first and only photo I've seen of it in its crashed state. The Dennis DF133 FoT (RHN896X) replaced this in 1981.

This explains its absence from the line up outside of Billingham Fire Station for the safety postcard issued by Cleveland Fire Brigade.

I rode the sister FoT at Grangetown in the late 70's the foam conc used to slosh around the tank and cause problems for the driver. I remember speculation this may have contributed to the accident of the Billingham FoT

Ian I am not sure but AFFF made its debut in the 70's so that would be my guess. I don't remember the Grangetown FoT having one,

AFFF was invented by Richard Tuve in the early 60s and immediately adopted by the U.S. Navy. 3M was the first to do manufacturing of AFFF. It wasn't until the 70s that it became more popular around the world.

Does anyone have any information i.e. registration numbers, of the two water carriers constructed by Carmichael's which are mentioned as being similar to the AEC Mercury FoT, NDC646G?
Ed: they feature in Ray Banyard recent 2022 book on W Yorkshire with photos on page 84. They are KWW227/228G in white livery.
