Bedford TK & Bedford TJ Appliances
HOR 853E Hampshire Fire Service Foam Tanker which was stationed at Fawley now re - named Hardley Fire Station the other is RYC 470F which was with Somerset Fire Brigade and was a Water Tender stationed at Somerton i took this photo a few years back in Poole Dorset at the Bear Cross Steam Rally .Both Gents in this photo were in the AFS John Powell was at Hampshire Christchurch now a Dorset Station and Mike Thorne was stationed at Hamworthy Dorset. I had a phone call yesterday to say John sadley passed away on the 10/2/12 .

Interesting that the HCB Angus coach built J series conversion was a year newer than the TK, which was built on a standard chassis with the Bedford factory cab.
Why would a brigade buy the coach built version on a conversion chassis when the standard TK was available?

That's always been a puzzle to me also. I think the TK was available in pretty much the same variety of weight ranges as the bonneted J Series.

I think it would depend on how the body builder did the conversion.
The TJ in as built form has a bonnet on the front with the cab and controls well behind the front axle as per a car. To become a fire engine, the chassis would need to be converted to forward control. As the original cab would no longer fit, a coach built body would have to be fitted.
The TK was bodied in Hampshire's own workshops, so, it may have come from a Bedford dealer as a chassis and cab. Whereas the coach builders would have bought the donor chassis direct from Bedford.

The Hampshire brigade did build a lot of excellent bodies, too, and some others did similar good work. But most TKs had either HCB or other commercial bodywork, and HCB were building these and the J Series conversions at the same time!
Not only that, but they and Carmichael both had a variety of TK appliances with full custom cabs of quite a few different designs, also at the same time they were building on TK cabs or chassis-cowls. I can understand brigades buying the CSV or HSC cab, but the others were mostly aluminum and/or fiberglass jobs - which do not seem to have had any advantages.
