Is this a "D" series with twin headlights?

Yes it's "D" series and yes it has twin headlights.

Its the later cab style - one of these 3 sisters was used in the publicity material for the new dennis "D" series.

Those Dennis D's with single lights are Jag engined, and have the square grill.

That exhaust is cream crackered. Its the original box (or so) and its got a nice crack 90% of the way round. It was clad in aluminium, rather badly - and its the alloy thats tainted. The baffles inside have all collapsed too.

The good news is - its in walsall being rebuilt in stainless steel.

How does a 'D' differ from an 'R' series?

I don't know too much about the difference of "D"s and "R"s but D's were generally narrower, more suited to rural areas. The D's have an integrated Cab and rear body, where as the R's had a separate cab section. Also if you look at the roof line above the windscreen, D's have a slight peak, R's had a more rounded swept back front roof edge.

Dennis 'D's I think had narrower chassis rails as you can fit a Perkins V8 into a Dennis R but not in a Dennis D. A Dennis R had a higher G .V.W to a Dennis D I think

The 'R' Series as described had a separate cab, this was because it was the first crew safety cab offered by Dennis Bros with a steel type roll cage within the cab, this may well have helped when one the Durham 'T' reg appliances left the road 13 years ago this September from Peterlee sadly with the loss of two firefighter's.
he R however was a bigger appliance!

Regarding the accident to LGR 914T - two firemen were very sadly killed in that.

Vehicles made of wood are incredibly susceptible to rot... I've found a lot of damp patches over the last few weeks - I've pretty much covered every inch of the structure and plywood doing the "key" test, and there is only one place where its soft enough for the key to leave impression (my fingernail does a similar job mind). I think it needs replacing and it just so happens to be structural to the cab too.
