Commer/Miles Wilts UWV560

Photo taken by Lester Solway and published with his full permission. I cant find the comment but I'm sure I read on this site recently that this appliance is currently undergoing restoration. It shows the appliance on the run at Salisbury where it spent its last couple of years. This was the last Commer/Miles delivered to Wiltshire Fire Brigade and was also the last one on the run. I think it started life as a pump escape but was later converted. I have also posted a rear shot.

Thank you for this photo.. I had this machine for many years from 1988 and never had any photo's of her while she was on the run.. fond memories of all the rallies I did in her as well as the charity work we did..

This was my very 1st fire engine I never bought.. and the very 1st month I got her.. I had a visit from a D.O. from WILTSHIRE a gentleman called DAVE CHURCHILL (oh yes oh yes) He left Cleveland Fire to go to work in Wiltshire.. I'd been on nights and got knocked out of bed by him.. I thought it was a P take but he showed me his ID he had friends who lived a couple of doors away and he was visiting them.. when I had her she had a 50 foot Metal Wheeled Escape on the back..

Barrie, I thought they were rather sedate considering what came in the years to follow, , , ,

Decidedly sedate, Pav !
When it makes it on here, I've posted the last Northumber;land Commer WrE -ATY 401B - which carried Victor Healey name plates, even though it was to Miles design.

I always though it a pity that Miles did not configure these appliances with slightly different bodywork. This would have taken advantage of the fact that these Commer chassis were designed from the beginning to accommodate full front doors with a nice low step ahead of the front mudguards.

I guess it was cheaper just to build them like a Bedford with a Pinnochio nose, because most of the parts would remain the same.

But its much too late now!
