New Zealand International - AQN321

This 1988 International 1950D was built by Alexander Perrie for the Australian Capital Territories Fire & Rescue Service. It was subsequently purchased by the NZ Defence Force & after an extensive rebuild by SPEL was allocated to the Burnham Camp. It is understood however that the appliance proved unreliable & it was withdrawn from service & sold at auction in 2008. I understand that it is now with the Wanaka Transport Museum.

Hey, David do you know why this appliance is painted green and do you also know why it proved unreliable? Most Internationals here in Australia that served the NSWFB were in service for more than 40 years and a close relative of mine says that he would attend a fire in one of these any day. Also, my Grandfather drove international cargo trucks for 40 years and both say that these were the most reliable trucks they have ever used and declared them to be "unbreakable". With thanks from Tiger.

This and it's sister came from the Australian Capital Territory Fire and Rescue Service who have this color scheme as standard. The appliances both received substantial rebuilds prior to entering service. They initially were reliable but towards their withdrawal either one or the other or both were at workshops constantly and the Army resorted to leasing a Dennis appliance from the NZFS to cover. International appliances in NZ are reliable and a handful that are approaching or past their 30th birthday are still in service with the NZFS.

Thanks, David. Also, do you know the reason(s) why, towards their withdrawal, they were constantly in the workshops for repairs. With thanks from Tiger.

This appliance was first NZ registered in May 2002 and lasted in service for 6 years before disposal.
