Craig - Nice to see this appliance it was with Haltemprice UDC in the East Riding of Yorkshire - do you have the picture of the old Beverley Fire Station with it just visible in the yard at the rear of the appliance bays ? if not send me an email and I'll get one for you

This one was actually ordered by Pocklington according to the Dennis details. However, being delivered in 1942, it got an NFS series registration of course. Could someone possibly supply me with a chassis number please ?

Rick - this is not the Haltemprice UDC appliance, theirs was a Dennis Ace were as this is a Dennis Lt.4. Most probably for Holderness RDC although they ordered a Hose Reel Tender so the pump was probably fitted by the N.F.S. It must have been delivered to the N.F.S. for it to have a London registration number. It is shown as being at Pocklington in 1948 when the East Riding of Yorkshire Fire Brigade came into being.

My apologies, I just assumed this was the Haltemprice one that is in preservation in roughly the same area - on reflection it is not - its so good to see yet another old appliance emerge from hiding !!

Ian - I don't have access to the Dennis details but I'm guessing that they might say that the appliance was to be delivered to Pocklington. That doesn't mean that Pocklington ordered it, just that that was where the NFS wanted it delivered.
The only record I have of Pocklington UDC buying a Dennis is a G series in 1930. I still maintain that Holderness RDC originally ordered this Lt4 regardless of where it might have ended up.

Craig - that's great - that's the number I was after - thanks a lot.
Dusty - I see your point exactly - but the Dennis details do normally show the ordering authority, and don't usually take account of what was really an internal matter so far as the NFS allocation was concerned. The NFS built TLs were a prime example of this, in that no delivery brigade is shown.

Uou're perfectly correct about Holderness, my error came about as a result of a double entry - one minus a chassis number - on the listing.

However, the now to hand chassis number proves that it was indeed the vehicle you said - again - sincere apologies on my part.

Can I get this correct.
She was ordered in 1942 by Pocklington. The pump was fitted by the NFS as they required a pump engine, but she spent time at Holderness before going to Beverley. Are there any dates.

Craig - I was the one who slipped up here. The ordering authority was in fact Holderness, and the Pocklington reference was an (incorrect) double entry. It did however go to Pocklington either during the war or - more probably - on dentationalisation - of the NFS and formation of East Riding of Yorkshire.

The Holderness Rural District Council put out a tender in March 1941 for the supply of a New World Tender and a 350gpm Trailer Pump. Obviously Dennis Bros. won the tender to supply the Tender and probably the Trailer Pump as well.

The NFS in the Hull area reported that they had taken delivery of Dennis Tender GXA 121 on 11/12/42. The fact that it was referred to as a Tender suggests that it did not have a main pump fitted and probably towed a Trailer Pump.

Where the appliance was then stationed is unknown. It may very well have gone to Patrington which was in the Holderness RDC area and had a fire station but I don't know.

A 1948 East Riding fleetlist shows GXA 121 as a Pump stationed at Pocklington. If this is correct then the NFS must have fitted the Sulzer pump to the appliance sometime between 1943 and 1948 and probably stationed it at Pocklington at the same time.

I have no idea when it was sold but if it ended up at Hull then it must have lasted until 1974 at least to have passed into Humberside Fire Brigade.

Given the length of time after the forming of the NFS and the delivery of GXA 121 (sixteen months) then it is possible it may have been painted grey from new rather than red.

On the Red vs Grey debate, GLW 473 - chassis delivered grey but further investigation required. GXN 782 - factory photos appear two tone red / black as ordered (in 1941). NFS Instructions of the time allow red livery but grey on repainting.

My Aberdeen Leyland Cub FK9A BRG 586 (registered in July 1941) was ordered in red (there are no works photos available) however there is definitely grey paint under the red it was repainted with post war - this grey paint was over all of the brass pump deliveries etc and I assume was either painted grey immediately after delivery or even at the factory pre delivery (after being painted red) As yet I have found no 'City of Aberdeen' lettering or crests though
