Fire Engines Photos

This was the TL I did my 'test' on around 1981/2 at Scunthorpe - it was originally stationed at Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire - they recieved our ERF/HCB Angus 85' HP NFU 121F ex Lindsey County Fire Brigade and we got EWR 749C ex West Riding Fire Brigade from Goole (re laddered after a ladder collapse in 1975 which killed the fireman at the head of the ladder) EWR was replaced a year or so later with this appliance (although 7407 AT ex Hull City Fire Brigade and shown on this site recently did spend a brief time with us at Scunthorpe !)this was a wonderful TL and was finally replaced in 1986 with Dennis Metz C188 EAG - (also featured on the site)
7981 BT was sold via Jacksons of Misson nr Doncaster to Mr. Luce from Worcester it was re registered PSU 404 and is now in preservation in the south and is often seen at the Great Dorset Steam Fair

No problems Steve - I ought to confirm this pic was taken at Scunthorpe - to get really sad the kit rack in the pic has a tunic hanging there on its own - thats my spare with my cap on the shelf where the helmet should be - so it follows I was on duty the day you took the picture - small world isn't it !

Rick. Wasn't the ladder that broke a Merryweather B type? Morecambes broke about the same time luckily on test, two men had been up it the day before. Do you know the nature of the failure? See you on Saturday at the Teesside rally (plug)

No Neal the ladder that failed was an 'A type' the vehicle was re laddered with a 'B type'- yes I'll explain more at Teeside in the Beer tent (another plug!!!)

Nooo Glen - surely not 'Hull City Fire Brigade' was the busiest part of Humberside ! - or so they all kept telling us elsewhere in the county !

My cousin Tony Jackson was the 18 year old fireman who was killed when the ladder collapsed at Goole fire station in November 1975 whilst on a training exercise. Evidence would suggest that it was an old Merryweather A type ladder that had been around a long time on different engines and finally failed due to metal fatigue and corrosion. What a pity the bean counters thought the cost of a new ladder out weighed that of the cost of human life.

So wish I ever sold it now, lovely to drive, engine was a dream, Used it mainly for hire on chimneys, church roofs etc, also tree work.

PSU404 below in poorer condition. It looks as though it has now been fully restored and was rallied in 2022.

from 1990, used on tree surgery work, chimneys etc.. company name was Luce and Son Worcestershire. There is another AEC being used for tree surgery by Luce here
