This illustrates the German solution to hose stowage. At the rear, a typical one-man hose cart for 75 mm hose. With Stortz couplings, this can be used either to access the hydrant and/or for the main attack line. Some German fire services carry two of these, which is common practice in France, but others settle for a single cart. They typically accommodate 10 X 20 meter preconnected lengths.
The rear side locker holds the four hard suctions, which are carried across the bodywork in the upper section, above the pump. This locker also includes six hose baskets. THe top four each hold three preconnected 15 meter lengths of 52 mm hose, and the other two each hold two preconnected 20 meter lengths of 75 mm.
Unless a heavy hand line, ground monitor or aerial supply line is called for, the usual SOP is to run a 75 mm line to the entrance to the fire building, attach a controlling wye with one 75 and two 52s, and take the first 52 into the building with one or two baskets for internal operations. The 52 has a variable output spray/jet shutoff nozzle, usually designed to deliver up to 400 LPM at 7 AT. These are used much more often than 23 mm high pressure hose reels. Most pumpers have one reel, but they are usually confined to minor nuisance fires and not relied on at structure fires.
Every incident is different of course, but this is the basic approach; the baskets offer a speedy and flexible way of getting to work in a variety of different situations.
