K9,
as you might have guessed I am rather a fan of dennis.
(see www.clavis.co.uk/dennis ).
although I mainly collect the older models now, I am still very enthusiastic about rapiers and sabres. I think the above photo is just so good, I was wondering if you could email to me ([email protected]) the full size picture so I could make a large size print and have it on my wall?

best wishes,
barry.

It's a great feeling to know that other people appreciate the way this vehicle looks, as i built it back in 2002, and we're still building vehicles just as good looking at JDC now, maybe even better.

I, m from Canada and can't really adjust myself to these "RIGS" but I have to say this is by far the most beautiful photo of one I, ve seen on here.It takes some getting used to but I, m coming around to liking these little units.I find them small compaired to ours over here.

Hey Dollop, jdc don't have Dennis on their website, strange but true

Added by Big Al on 11 November 2008.
Sadly, the Dennis Sabre is no longer in production. Alexander Dennis, who make the cab and chassis, have decided its not economical to produce anymore, with so many safety and pollution standards to meet. Its a real shame, and many fire and rescue services are very disappointed. Its by far the most effective vehicle to build on and use. Dennis is the name that everybody remembers, and it seems that it will be no more. lets hope they change their minds and build a few more.

Added by Dollop on 17 November 2008.
That really is bad news, if anyone has riden on or driven a dennis then a scania it is no contest, well its to be expected, although someone said on another page that they were building a mk 9 sabre for some brigades, they must have changed thier minds, great, great shame

Added by Big Al on 17 November 2008.
The Dennis Sabre will never be beaten in the terms of a fire appliance, but it always had been very expensive, and that is the most important thing now. The Scania is able, as are most of the alternatives, even the new Volvo, which is a bit of a suprise to most, but none will be as effective as the Sabre, a vehicle designed for a purpose, not one adapted to suit another. Who knows, maybe something may arrive one day!

i was reading another persons website who deals with dennis alot said that west midlands has put an order for 12 dennis sabres over 2 years but dennis has declined the order so that means west midlands will have to find another chassis ( will they choose scania or man who knows ) if any one out there can shed some light let us know i think scania is west midlands colour might look quite good ??

Added by Calvin Fox on 18 November 2008.
the scania always reminds me of a cement mixer really, i am a serving firefighter of some 26 years and am happy to see progress and modernisation, i see the use of lorry or tipper chassis a retrograde step, and as an aside they are terribly slow (so they don't roll over in corners i guess )and are so so high it is very hard to get in and out when rigged, they are not as reliable as the public at large may think and lastly they are cheaper as the manufacturers at their own admittance sell them at a loss to gain market share as a halo product, where are the European laws that dictate that ?? the end has happened well so be it, Dennis must also look at themselves also, yet the australians /new ealanders can't get enough of them second-hand so that bega the question, why are we so stupid !!

Added by Big Al on 19 November 2008.
I couldn't agree more with your comments Al, a guy I trained with at Stansted had been in South Africa / Rhodesia for years, he had seen an aircraft hanger stuffed to the rafters with Dennis appliances, mainly B Types. He asked why and was told that as they couldn't buy new because of the apartheid embargo, they had stocked up " with the best appliances ever made"!
A testament if ever there was one.

this is an article i found on a website for good practice in the workplace,
Production of fire appliances at Guildford, Surreybased Dennis Fire, a subsidiary of the Alexander Dennis (ADL) busandcoachmaking group, has been halted until a new supplier of cabs can be found. Dennis Fire cabs hitherto have come from Dennis Eagle, the (unrelated) Warwickbased manufacturer of refusecollection trucks which has been owned by Ros Roca of Spain since last year. But now Dennis Eagle is demanding a commitment from Dennis Fire to buy at least 50 cabs a year, and ADL refuses to make such a commitment.
Dennis Fire cabs are built at Dennis Eagle’s plant in Blackpool, Lancashire where production of the 1, 000th fireappliance cab was celebrated earlier this year. The Dennis Eagle Elite 2 refusecollection vehicle (RCV) cab and the fire appliance cab are constructed in a similar way, with Cromweld stainlesssteel panels on a hollowsection steel frame, but hardly any parts are shared between them.

Now ADL has been told that the Blackpool plant, facing other demands on its production capacity, needs to be building at least one fire appliance cab a week to make it worthwhile. Dennis Eagle currently needs around 900 refusecollection vehicle cabs a year, and MAN is thought to want around 150 cabs for its municipal chassis, already available elsewhere in Europe and expected to arrive in the UK next year.

ADL says it is unable to guarantee an order for at least 50 cabs a year. Dennis Fire registrations in the ten months to the end of October totalled 28, according to figures from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

“Our business is effectively on hold now, ” says Dennis Fire general manager Roger Paice. “We are talking to other suppliers who could take over cab production. It is not a difficult cab to produce because there are no pressings – it is lasercut and folded metal. The more complex part is the interior trimming and electrical wiring.” Dennis Fire owns the assembly jigs at Blackpool and the intellectual property rights to the cab, points out Mr Paice.

Refuting any suggestion that this disruption could prompt ADL to pull the plug on a Dennis Fire business which next year would be celebrating its 100th anniversary, ADL corporate affairs director Bill Simpson insists that the busbuilder remains committed to the fireappliance market. “You can forget any ideas about this being the beginning of the end as far as Dennis Fire is concerned, ” says Mr Simpson. “We are in discussions with alternative suppliers right now.”

Mr Paice points out that the UK fireappliance market is so weak at present that the interruption in cab supply is not as devastating as might be imagined. “Some of the English fire and rescue services have heldoff buying new appliances in 2007 because of all the uncertainty surrounding dealing with Firebuy, ” he explains, referring to the new national procurement agency working on behalf of the English fire and rescue services (Transport Engineer September). “Although Firebuy claims to be doing what the government wants, its arrival has decimated the industry this year.” The number of fire appliance chassis registered this year also has been affected by some brigades bringing forward purchasing programmes last year to snap up remaining Euro3 chassis, in Mr Paice’s view. He expects a recovery next year. “I know that some fire and rescue services have budgeted to buy twice their usual number of appliances in 2008, ” says Mr Paice. “And we will have a new cab supplier lined up by then.”

Dennis Fire production and engineering design staff at Guildford, Surrey also work on ADL buses. This means there is no question of redundancies as a result of the halt in cab supplies, according to Mr Paice.

ked this up by accident, anyone know anything about this article??

Dont know anything else than whats said here Al, seems to be corporate talk for if we dont get orders we will close that part of the operation. Isnt it a sad reflection in Britain in 2008 though?

Perhaps it is a little too soon to dismiss the Sabre! Read the press release below.

Dennis fire appliance production rekindled

1 September 2008
Production of Dennis fire appliances is set to restart, as an indirect result of MAN’s ditching of plans to build refusecollection vehicles.
Alexander Dennis stopped building fire appliances a year ago following demands from its cab supplier Dennis Eagle (owned by Ros Roca of Spain) for guaranteed orders for at least 50 a year. Unable to commit to that number, Alexander Dennis stopped production of fireappliance chassis at its Dennis Fire plant in Guildford, Surrey while another cab supplier was sought (Transport Engineer December 2007). But at the Fire & Rescue show in Liverpool last month Dennis Fire was telling brigades that production would restart next year, with the familiar Cromweld stainless-steel cab built by Dennis Eagle in Blackpool.

Dennis Eagle has had a change of heart on minimum orders it seems because production capacity reserved for a low-entry cab for MAN’s RCV is no longer required. Unveiled at the Hanover show of 2004, MAN’s RCV was a 6x2 chassis with 10.5-litre D20 engine and positively-steered trailing rearaxle. The chassis steps down ahead of the steer axle to accommodate a Dennis Eagle Elite 2 low-entry cab, customised for MAN. The original plan was for production of this MAN RCV to start in 2005 but that date was put back. In 2006 MAN said that deliveries of right-hand-drive versions would start in 2008. It now emerges that at the beginning of this year the decision was taken at MAN’s Munich head office to axe the RCV project. A crucial factor in the decision is thought to be booming demand for mainstream trucks in eastern Europe. MAN sold a record 93, 000 trucks last year, 17 per cent more than in 2006, and forecasts that the 2008 total will be higher still.

There is bound to be disappointment in MAN’s UK sales and marketing base in Swindon at the loss of an opportunity to win business in the UK’s low-cab RCV market, reckoned to be the largest in Europe with annual sales of around 1, 300 vehicles. Many operators of refuse-collection trucks are thought to have expressed interest in the MAN.

There will be no immediate return to the fire-appliance market for Guildford-built Sabres because Dennis Fire has decided to skip Euro-4 engines and go straight to Euro-5. “We can’t get the first of these from Cummins until next March, ” explains Dennis Fire general manager Roger Paice. “It will probably be June before we see the first chassis.”

So Big Al, John, and all of us who believe that Dennis's rule the fire ground there is a future for us all....

Best wishes,

Barry.

Thanks Barry, wouldn't you think they would publicise more though? I get the feeling they are using British Leyland as a model sometimes!

Added by John Stott on 22 November 2008.
This is my last comment as i feel i have been boring everyone to sleep, scanvolmanmerc are chasing market share at a loss as a halo product we all know that, the British government don't as its against eec rules but no doubt that doesn't matter as we are always to be seen as the fair man of europe, hey, no-one else is, i am at a loss as why the whole world loves the marque and the very people who can give it the orders it needs to survive and invest are the government, and they buy volscanmerc for the defence services, they say its best value ??? for who, sweden ! germany !, not great britain ltd thats for sure, just remember volvo closed down their irvine factory and what they with the british bus chassis manufacturing is scandalous, we really should look beyond the pretty cabs (personal) and think practicle, i hope west midlands can wait, they trailed other makes before and werent happy with them but money can be very persuasive look at warwickshire etc, and finally dennis should look at themselves and i really hope that their reliance on the continental makers for bus parts and some chassis has nothing to do with this situation (cynic me)good luck all, i am stuck climbing a mountain every time i get into the cab

Have A.D.L. started rebuilding the Dennis Sabre? As a firefighter with almost 30 years service, I have driven Volvos. Scanias, and Dennis Sabres. The Sabre was a far superior vehicle to both Scanias and Volvos.

Added by John Ferguson on 05 August 2009.
I was speaking to the Sales Director at Alexander Dennis last week, and he has informed me that there are no plans now, or in the future to recommence building either the Dennis Sabre or Dennis Dagger. These machines will be sorely missed.

Added by John Ferguson on 13 October 2009.
Did he give any indications why ? they need to make a comeback and now as brigades still seem to want them .

This really is bad news and a shame for the brigades and Britain in general .

Added by John Johnstone on 14 October 2009.
Ah the Euro chestnut lads! Scania and Mann agree to stay out of the bin wagon trade, what a world!

Added by John Stott on 14 October 2009.
They are concentrating on their bus building operations, and felt that There wasn`t enough interest from UK Brigades to justify recommencement in building these magnificent machines.
