Ford Water Tender Holy Isle

LTY 331P was a Ford Water Tender operated by Northumberland Fire Brigade and crewed by volunteer firefighters on Holy Isle or Lindisfarne.
The island is normally reached by driving across a causeway but this becomes impassible twice daily when the tide comes in. The volunteers were disbanded some years ago but an appliance is garaged on the island the crews are flown from the mainland by helicopter if there is a call when the causeway is closed to road traffic.

Wonderful appliances Barrie. Thank you for sharing it with us. I particularly fell for the unique North Eastern bodywork and the ladders that look like they're being shot into space. I believe they had particular problems in Brewick with this configuration due to the medievil archway on entering the town?

The bodywork on this series of 17 Ford appliances is interesting. For the story see Ron Henderson's Northumberland FRS page 131. There is another one here at picture 18229.

In my opinion, HCBA (eventually) built a much more integrated crew cab, which looked better than these, the CFA or the Carmichael offerings.

To my mind, the neatest D series crew cab was the full tilt four door built by Reliant and used by Merryeather, some examples of which are on this site.
