This is not n Engine of the German Forces but from the International Forces stationed in Germany. German Forces have Licences starting with Y.

Unfortunately not the case. Foreign forces in Germany retain their own registrations. "X" is used to donate Bundeswehr vehicles used within a NATO structure, ie AFCENT in Maastricht, or RAF Geilenkirchen (NATO AWACS fleet)

Didn't the major airports like Hamburg, Frankfurt, Templehoff and Munich utilise these during the 1970's-1980's?

This photo was made in South Limburg. If I dig into my memory this unit came from the NATO base Geilenkirchen

Yes, they were standard airport units in Germany in most major airports and with the German Air Force/Naval Air Arm up until the mid 1980s. The main equipment suppliers were either Saval-Kronenberg or rosenbauer.
