DAF LF55-230i/Plastisol Pump Ladder

L52 Fulwood's latest appliance is this DAF LF55-230i/Plastisol Pump Ladder. It's a shame that the name Leyland has been dropped from the DAF catalogue as the name was synonimous with the County of Palatine for so many years. Out of curiosity, I went to the former TVAC site on Centurion Way in Leyland and how ironic that UV Modular -who manufacture plastic Ambulance bodies- are now occupying the site.

You know when you're getting old when you photograph the 9th generation pump at places like Fulwood.

UV modular may be part of Plastisol UK based in Chorley which has partly risen out of the ashes of TVAC afterthey were Asset stripped.

Well it is actually Plastisol who make the plastic body shells and cab extensions, and it was TVAC and Papworth who "finished" them, adding the roller doors, hose reels etc into the body. I believe Papworth are still using the shells and Plastisol's new UK branch are doing the complete job.

Hi TVAC, Papworth , UVModular , were in the AsserCo group and were all Asset Stripped & made redundant.

I was at Plastisol this morning, they have three of six new DAFs in build for Lancs and are building the cabs, then the vehicles are going to Browns in Ireland for the rest of the bodywork to be completed.

Andrew, Strongs make plastic body shells for Browns and I believe they also make the "PolyBilt" bodies for JDC

Because it's a new firm Plastisol UK does not yet have Firebuy authorisation so Lancs had to go elsewhere for the main build.

I believe that Firebuy has been disbanded Neal...it was a purchasing organisation, in theory brigades would be able to obtain higher discounts through collective bargaining....it did not preclude the purchase of equipment of appliances outside of the Firebuy umberella...as I understand it.

Firebuy may be still operating as I have been told they have a thirty year contract with the MOD for there fire appliances etc.

Firebuy ceases to exist in April 2011, there is/was no compulsion for any service to procure appliances via Firebuy......apparently LFB bought nothing at all using Firebuy.
Plastisol was on the Firebuy approved list of pumping appliance manufactures the full list :-
