Picture from Truckfest on 4/8/2001. Classed as a Support Unit at this time I think this vehicle had more than one role during it's active life.

This Vario bus chassis has been used in numerous countries as an incident command/communications unit. They have also been rigged as BA tenders, hazmat units and other specials, where there is a need for lots of space but not too much payload - as they are limited to 8000 KG GVW.

A big empty box can indeed serve a lot of useful purposes, and is quite easy to adapt to different roles. (It is also very easy to overload something this large!)

Now the Vario has been discontinued, some fire services are replacing them with various Japanese or Korean brand midi-buses, such as Hino, Isuzu, Hyundai and Mitsubishi....
