Snorkel 1 Ford King Hydraulic Platform Nanaimo
Snorkel 1 is a 1977 Ford C900 Tandem/King from the Nanaimo Fire department. Pump capacity 1050 gallon/minute. Tank contains 250 gallon of water. The boom is 85 feet. License plate 0187MG.

The City of Nanaimo Mayor and Council unveiled the latest addition to community safety
today for the citizens of Nanaimo. A new aerial apparatus, called the Sky Arm by Pierce
Manufacturing will be going into service in the near future and will provide the community
with enhanced protection using state of the art technology. As part of the fleet
replacement, the Sky Arm will replace the Snorkel which was purchased by Nanaimo
Fire Rescue in 1977. Having served the community for over 30 years the Snorkel has
been retired.
The new Sky Arm provides additional capabilities not seen in the Nanaimo Fire Rescue
fleet previously. Not only will the Sky Arm be utilized for suppression, it will also be a key
piece of apparatus for providing high intensity lighting and provides the ability to be
utilized in rescues of all types including water, high angle, ravine and ditch.
The Sky Arm is a four section 100’ articulating platform that provides ladder
access/egress as well as the elevating platform. It provides the ability to manoeuvre
around obstacles and cramped space because of the 16 foot articulating boom section.
The platform of the Sky Arm has the ability to pivot 22 degrees to either side making it
extremely versatile for fire and rescue situations.
According to Mayor John Ruttan, "The purchase of the new Sky Arm aerial forms part
of Council's commitment to continue to provide service and protection for the citizens of
Nanaimo by ensuring fleets and equipment are current. Nanaimo continues to grow and
with the replacement of the Snorkel, Nanaimo Fire Rescue has maintained its ability to
respond to the growing needs of the community."
"The new aerial is a welcome addition to Nanaimo Fire Rescue and will expand our
current operational capabilities particularly in fires such as multi-story, apartment and
commercial buildings and rescue situations" stated Ron Lambert, Fire Chief. "The
Crews are being trained on the many uses of the Sky Arm and this will allow us to
continue to respond efficiently and effectively in the community. The Aerial will
complement and enhance our inventory of fire suppression equipment and tools and we
are pleased to have it rolling into service."
