Reminds me of FDNY's Seagrave ladders in the seventies. the Union insisted on eight man ladder companies, but the standard cab could only accommodate seven. So they added a "telephone box" on the right side, just like this curious appendage on the Land-Rover - except theirs had a door and a window. I never found out if the lucky guy who rode there had his own heater, but somehow I doubt it!
