Standard French SDIS pump water tender. This one belongs to the Oise River Valley Departmental Fire and Rescue Service. With the exception of Paris and Marseilles, which have military fire services, all French fire services are organized by department - there are no city fire brigades.
2000 LPM @ 10 AT, 3000 liter tank, five member crew. The truncated rear bodywork design reflects the fact that two one-man hose carts are carried at the rear of the vehicle. Each one holds ten preconnected 20 meter lengths of 70mm hose, which has Stortz-type couplings and can be used either for hydrant supply or attack lines.
All of these departmental fire brigades combine both full-time and volunteer personnel, often at the same station, and all of them also operate EMS ambulances in co-operation with the nationwide SAMU organization.
French apparatus are often Renault, but Iveco, Mercedes, MAN and Scania trucks are not too rare, and quite a few Land-Rovers are also used in rural areas. The SIDS have to work with standard specifications issued by the Ministry of the Interior, but the Army (Paris) and Navy (Marseilles) have more individually customized units.
