Merryweather Steamer

This unusual Merryweather steamer is in the National Railway Museum York. This rear end shot shows the boiler but no fire pump the reason being the pump is at the front. I will post the front end next. It was built for the North Eastern Railways Gateshead works in 1880

Image #25438 is the front view - I wonder what was the advantage, from this lay-out, , , engineering-wise ?

Distributing the weight more forward, for better carriage-balance; hose-connections further away from machinery and boiler; stowage for ready-use hoses above connecting-rods (don't have to waiting for hose-reel to arrive)perhaps...?
