Dennis F8 Grimsby Borough FB

DEE 496 Dennis F8. Although allocated to Grimsby Central station this photo was taken by me at the Chelmsford Avenue station in 1963. She carried 250g water, being of the "Derbyshire" configuration and was the work-horse of the Grimsby brigade.

An excellent image, but can someone explain the term "Derbyshire" configuration.

Interesting to note this is carrying a two section 10.5m aluminium ladder along with an alloy roof ladder. I've seen 45 foot 'gutbusters' carried on F8's, but never this combination. My F8 still carries the more usual 35 foot wooden Ajax, with a wooden short extension ladder and wooden roof ladder!

Steve - this refers to the full width water tank and the resulting absence of side lockers above the rera axle. The standard F8 had side lockers above the rera wheel arches, with either a 200 gallon tank and full width cross lockers amidships, or a 300 gallon tank with side lockers.

Rob,
Many thanks for your reply to my question.

Steve

This appliance was still on the run as a brigade spare in Humberside in 1977 ..I remember seeing it only once at Bridlington and was the only F8 handed over to Humberside on reorganisation.

Regarding the 'Derbyshire configuration'...its correct that Derbyshire had F8's with an oval tank mounted across the full width of the chassis (Brett Claytons URB 87 being an example) but they also had the more standard type of F8 with full side lockers and tank mounted lengthways on the chassis (my F8 895 BNU being of this type)

If only I'd bought DEE 496 on disposal ???

Added by Rick Loudon on 14 January 2014.
As already discussed the Derbyshire examples were very similar with the larger tank, but had a taller rear branch locker than DEE 496.

Rick - It couldn't of been the Ex Grimsby F8 you saw in Bridlington as the F8 went quite a few years before being replaced by CEE 999C back in 1965, are sure it wasn't DEE109 Grimsby's Old F12 which survived into Humberside at Bridlington? or Wakefield's pump from Hull Life Museum?

Added by Brian Redgrift on 18 January 2014.
It most definitely wasn't FHL 650 (Wakefield) as that was still at Riber Castle in Derbyshire in the late '80's before being bought for preservation by the late David Baxter...and now rallied by Denis Williams of Beverley

Brian....I'll stand corrected but, having freshly returned from a training school full of F8, F12 and F15's (Derby) I'll still maintain it was an F8 ...DEE 496 .....the appliance I saw was a spare on the run.....was DEE transferred to Bridlington or into B div as a spare ? To dispose of a major pump (DEE) after 10 or 11 years seems a bit quick ?

Added by Rick Loudon on 18 January 2014.
Hi Rick, the F8 DEE496 and F12 DEE109 were both new in 1952, the F12 seeing out its days as salvage/Foam tender and transferred into Humberside on its creation lasting until 1975? The F8 was replaced in June 1965 (nine years before Humberside was created) and was a Grimsby County Borough Machine on its withdrawal after 13 years an ex Grimsby Fireman told me. The only ex Grimsby Borough appliances I am aware of being transferred to Humberside in 1974 were BEE 999L Dennis F49, EJV955 F17, JJV 999F HP, CEE 999C F34, BJV 999L Commer Rescue and F12 Foam Tender DEE109.

Hi Brian,
I'm sorry to have to contradict you but I have today been sent a picture of the F8 DEE 496 with Humberside markings outside Cleethorpes Fire Station..this proves it was still in Humberside in 1974 at the earliest, for two reasons ..Cleethorpes was a Lindsey County station pre '74 and its got Humberside County markings on it !

I can't post the picture as I have been asked to by the sender as its not their copyright !

This is most definitely the F8 I saw at Bridlington (probably as a spare pump) in late 1976 or early 1977 .

Rick , then why can't you e-mail me a copy of this picture so that I can verify what your saying is true . My own knowledge says that no F8 served at Cleethorpes Fire Station from 1960-1977 .In the 50's Cleethorpes had 2 Bedford S-Type pump and pump escape under Lindsey FB, these were then replaced by 2 newer appliances Bedford TK's one being MFW 986 F the other a G reg . So to my knowledge no F8 ever served there .Are you saying that the F8 should have Lindsey FB markings on it pre 1974 ??? . Looking at the Dennis Society website they have our F12 pump escape registered as DEE 496 when infact it should be DEE 109 surely you can tell the difference between an F8 pump and F12 pump escape ??? . So never mind trolling over mine or Royce Treacher's pictures put up this picture you have , or shut up . Yes , DEE 109 pump escape was handed over to Humberside , but not a 1952 Dennis F8 , Humberside didn't want our 1959 Dennis F24 so I think your coming down with old timers disease .

Rick , send us an e-mail of this picture you claim to be of an F8 belonging to Grimsby County Fire Brigade supporting Humberside markings .

Well despite responding to Brian Redgrift via personal email explaining why I cannot post the picture verifying DEE 496 survived into Humberside....and asking him to apologise regarding his comments posted above he has declined to do so !!!
As a result I'll post an abridged response on here;
The picture I was sent was not copyrighted to the sender who specifically asked me NOT to publish it to which I will respect his request completely !
I also said the picture showed it with Humberside markings outside Cleethorpes fire station...it would have been a reserve pump by then and may have been on the run there or simply garaged there.I did NOT say DEE was allocated to Cleethorpes in Lindsey County Fire Brigade days !
As I currently own 3 F8 , s and an F12 I feel I am more than qualified to tell the difference between an F8 and an F12 !

I then felt it right I should point Mr Redgrift in the direction of the "malicious communications act of 1988" and suggested he read and inwardly digested its contents

I am very late coming into this discussion but what I can say is, that I've looked at the FBS fleet list for Humberside in 1975 and it certainly shows Dennis F8 DEE 496 at Training. Also listed are the F12 (DEE 109) as a FoT, F17 TL (EJV 955), F24 (MEE 247), F34 (CEE 999C), F36 / SS50 PHP (JJV 999F), F49 WrE (BEE 999L) and a Commer / Garner CU (BJV 999L) that I assume came from Grimsby. Only two are shown on DVLA, the F17 as taxed and the F49 as SORN. Were any more preserved?

Rick, I have just checked my photos and I have an original colour slide of Grimsby's Dennis F8 on the forecourt of a fire station with a big HUMBERSIDE name plate on the side. Must be a photoshop job!!!!!

Simon and Ron...thanks for arriving late into this saga...your comments are noted and hopefully Mr Redgrift will accept that he is incorrect on this occassion..you both are equal first on my list of 'go to experts'in the event of me either being unsure (or more likely unknowing) on a particular subject..your support is very much appreciated..thank you both!

It seems that the rear crew compartment on these little Dennis appliances was a bit cramped. Did they have room for BA sets in there, or did they have to put them in the side lockers?

Added by Rob Johnson on 18 January 2021.
So, In response to Brian Redgrifts comments above on the subject of DEE 496 not coming through into Humberside Fire Brigade..I have finally turned up a photo of DEE 496 taken post 1st April 1974 which quite clearly dates the picture to the week after 1st June 1974 (the date of the Flixborough disaster)..it shows DEE 496 in an appliance holding area and also shows it carrying no ladders...suggesting ?...it was a spare pump and was used as a means of transport for relief crews (there is reference to this occurring in the incident log)...I can therefore quite categorically state that Mr Brian Redgrift is wrong in his comments.
