Land Rover Pump Cheshire

DMB 901X is the last operational Land Rover pump operated by Cheshire F&RS and is stationed at Audlam and still carries the Cheshire Fire Brigade logo and crest. Photographed at Winsford HQ 17th August 2010 and understood to be withdrawn shortly. The Land Rover is a Jennings conversion

Any ideas of the replacement Barrie ? Is 907 still at workshops ?

An identical vehicle was for sale reccently on ebay. It was at a garage in Cheshire and took along time to sell. I can't remember the reg number but perhaps someone knows if there was a 'twin' to this one that was disposed of in the last couple of months.

I have been told that one of the ex Fogging Unit Bravos mey be going to Audlam as a 4wd resource.

DMB 907X.....formally Poynton Fire Cadets is now on the Historical Society fleet, it is going to be displayed 'in its own right' and also to tow a trailer transporting the Merryweather Manual Pump.
We are hoping to have the old Cheshire Fire Brigade crest and names restored. It is at Winsford at the moment for convenience at the moment.

Hopefully Audlems will get preserved. This looks immaculate for its age. Can't see the Bravo's lasting this long in service !

Correct me if am wrong but has this landie received a facelift at somepoint?. Am certain this is a defender type front end on her?

Added by Stevie Murray on 22 August 2010.
Is this a stage 2 V8? It would explain the front end, Malpas ran one and I think it carried this frontend from new.

Cheshire FRS has recently kindly donated DMB 904X to Operation Florian, the overseas humanitarian aid charity. I collected it from Winsford and it's now tucked up in Florian's store in West Sussex. The machine had been with the Fire Cadets who apparently removed the engine. It's also lost its pump. It needs a fair bit of work but is definitely worth saving, but it's perhaps a bit elderly for overseas service. The front end on 901X is definitely right - 904 is identical - I thought it was a Stage 1 V8.

Does anyone know what the capacities of this unit were when it was placed into service? Crew, tank, pump, ladders, hosereel, hoses etc?

Added by Rob Johnson on 28 June 2013.
You could fit four firefighters in but it would usually go out to assist a full sized pump, it had a small water tank maybe 80 to 100 gallons, the hose reel was similar to those found in buildings rather than the conventional fire appliance type, I am not sure of the length of the tubing, it carried a light portable pump on a side out tray just inside the rear roller shutter door and that was connected into the hose reel pipework for use on the vehicle or disconnected and lifted of the appliance for pumping from open water when required.

HI Rob

It was classed as an L4T. I don;t think it had a tank and the pump was just a LPP. It wasn't "plumbed" in with a PTO. When mobilised to an incident it would have a crew of 2 to 4 depending on availability, as they were all allocated to retained stations. They were all identical and they were DMB 901 - 8X, replacing Carmichael Redwing L4P's. Ladder is as displayed on the roof. Hosereel - 1 of connected to the LPP. On the fleetlist they were listed as Land Rover V8 Safari's. 901 was at C10, Audlem, 902 was at C2, Sandbach, 903 was at C3, Middlewich (subsequently converted to a Line Rescue Tender, allocated to B3, Knutsford), 904 was at Holmes Chapel, 905 to A10, Tarporley, 906 to C6, Poynton, 907 to C7, Bollington and 908 to C8, Macclesfield. Anyone notice a pattern to the allocations?

Thanks Barrie.

I think most of these Land-Rovers had pretty limited capacities due to their size and the fact they could not carry much weight - but they had a unique ability to operate off-road and in confined spaces, which no other contemporary British vehicle could match.

The forward-control versions did have extra space, and of course the 6X4 version also made for an intertesting fire appliance as it could carry more weight.

Other countries had a similar approach - I recall a fotward-control AWD Volvo utility vehicle, the Austrian Steyr, the G-Wagen and the original little Unimog - all of these were also designed initially as military vehicles and soon found a role in the fire service.

Come on Adey, 908 was at Malpas! It was replaced at Malpas by another of the batch after it was rolled at Hampton Heath en route to a shout.

Very Good to see that DMB 901X is now in Preservation and was photographed at a Show in Huddersfield last June. As some may know, I maintain a Register of the surviving seven Cheshire Stage One V8s; myself owning 902X. The last known status of the batch being as follows: -

DMB 901X (Audlem) – As above;
DMB 902X (Sandbach) – Mine (Preserved in Cadet Livery);
DMB 903X (Middlewich & Knutsford) – Operational & currently with the Emergency team at a Power Station;
DMB 904X (Holmes Chapel & Malpas) – Donated by Cheshire to Operation Florian;
DMB 905X (Tarporley & Widnes) – Believed to be with a collector in France;
DMB 906X (Poynton) – Currently operational overseas;
DMB 907X (Bollington & Poynton) – With Cheshire F & R S Heritage Society;
DMB 908X (Malpas) – Disposed of a number of years ago following an accident; written off I believe.

Any information regarding the above would be appreciated.

It was good to see that 901X is now in Preservation as I've recently seen a couple of photographs of it taken at a show near Huddersfield last June. As some of you may know, I have DMB 902X and maintain a register of the eight Jennings Stage Ones that Cheshire had. As far as I’m aware the current status of the Land Rovers is as follows: -

DMB 901X (Audlem) – Preserved, but whereabouts unknown;
DMB 902X (Sandbach) – Mine (Preserved in Cadet Livery);
DMB 903X (Middlewich & Knutsford) – Operational & currently with the Emergency team at a Power Station in Kent;
DMB 904X (Holmes Chapel & Malpas) – Donated by Cheshire to Operation Florian;
DMB 905X (Tarporley & Widnes) – Believed to be with an unknown collector in France;
DMB 906X (Poynton) – Currently operational overseas;
DMB 907X (Bollington & Poynton) – With Cheshire F & R S Heritage Society;
DMB 908X (Malpas) – Disposed of a number of years ago, possibly written off.

Any information or update on the condition & whereabouts of these would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the update re. 901X being in the USA. I've been in touch with the dealership and have been able to let them have various pictures & pieces of information of use to the new owner. We hope to remain in contact with the vehicle.
I've also attempted to contact 'The Crazy French Farmer' & would love to hear an update on 905. The trail has gone cold on 903 since the Power Station closed & an update on 904 & 906 would be good. 902 & 907 are still going strong!

Hi, Thanks to Sébastien the current whereabouts and condition of DMB 906X are now known. Thanks Sébastien, I've tried to reply to your email but the message was rejected by your Server.

904X is tucked away still, awaiting an engine implant. We have two engines and are currently selecting the best of the two to go in it. Overseas projects are always getting in the way of finishing it but hopefully by next year?

Very many thanks for the info re. 904X Bruce & for your assistance Sebastien. 902X is safe & well at home and 907X at Service HQ. We now know that 906X is undergoing restoration, but the whereabouts of 901X & 903X are unknown. 901 was for sale at Copley Motors in Massachusetts, but appears to have moved on and 903 was last known to be at Kingsnorth Power Station in Kent, but the site closed in 2013. Any information as to their current location & condition would be appreciated - Cheers, Craig

Hello I have owned DMB908X since about 2001 after its roll over, onto its offside. This Land Rover has been stood for a number of years but is still in its original livery.

I was recently watching a clip of the show Pawn Stars on YouTube. They were in Los Angeles looking at buying printing plates for money. Being a fire engine and Land Rover nerd, I noticed there was a fire engine behind them. After doing some digging and googling various land rovers from U.K. fire brigades, I have a feeling this is the one that was mentioned as missing somewhere in the US above.

Here is a link to the video. But if it doesn’t work, the title is “Pawn Stars: Bank Note Plates Give Chumlee an Idea (Season 16) History”

It’s around the two minute mark.

hi I am the new owner of 904, I already own a landrover v8 and will be this one back on the road in spring and using it. I am in Hereford and hopefully will see it on the road.

If I remember correctly Malpas were on their way to Tarporley to cover them as it was the annual Christmas Do when it skidded on black ice and rolled. As for 905X I will try and dig up some old photo's when I'm next at the parents. My father was a retained fire fighter with Tarporley and I use to sit in it as a child pretending I was a fireman. I'm sure he's got the odd photo or several of it somewhere at home.
