Mid mount aerials are getting a bit less common these days, but of course many are still around, including FDNY's huge fleet of 75 and 95 foot Baker towers.
The main reason they are still quite popular is either low height apparatus halls and doorways(which is the New York problem in a nutshell) - or low bridges in their response areas.
The downside is of course their inevitable length, and a much more difficult job for the driver to maneuver in tight spaces...
