Can anybody explain our ludicrous UK number plate system to me?

When it was introduced with the '51' plate in the autumn of 2001, I actually thought it was excellent and pretty-much self-explanatory.

And then in March I saw the numeric '10' and thought: "Okay, it's not as clear as '59' was, but it still does what it says on the tin, I suppose." I expected it to be '010', and then '510' in September. To me, THAT makes sense.

But from this September, all new vehicles are carrying the numeric '60', and I'm left scratching my head!!!

What on earth is going on? I couldn't possibly hazzard a guess as to what comes out next March!

It just follows on the pattern 09, 59, 10, 60 next year will be 11 and 61
