This is an air-cooled petrol powered centrifugal pump installed on a horse drawn chassis.

The transition from steam to petrol power and from horses to motor traction took many forms during the first two decades of the last century.

In this 1912 version, the owners had the advantages of a more modern pump design, a much lighter power plant, which a team of horses could pull faster and further than a steamer, and avoided the expense of a motor chassis and the need to have trained drivers available.

It was most probably used by a village volunteer brigade.

The universal solution of a petrol-powered chassis with a PTO driven pump, first seen in 1904 (thanks to Merryweather) became the norm only in the early 1920s.
