Land Rover RP Gwynedd Fire Service
Originally CCC 149, this Land Rover was converted by Carmichael's in 1976 along with a series I swb Land Rover GPV FFF 169 from Dolgellau. When they returned, Gwynedd crews affectionately christened them Moon Buggies, but prior to the conversion, she was a Land Rover SII lwb/Sun Engineering L4P allocated to Betws-y-Coed along with an other Land Rover Series II lwb/Carmichael L4P AJC488C.
The former fire station in Betws-y-Coed was annexed to the stables at the Royal Oak public house until 1976 when a converted chapel at Pentre Du was opened.
The desire for a large WrT appliance was needed as entry to the stables was via a narrow arch thus Betws-y-Coed was the only station in Caernarfonshire to run 2 L4P's. Prior to this a pair of Austin K2 ATV's GLR 376 and GLR 377 were on the run at Betws-y-Coed.
CCC 149 was reallocated to Conwy upon return to Gwynedd and replaced Commer OX/Carmichael WrE CCC 160 which was reallocated to Tywyn to replace Bedford SB/HCB WrT EFF 108. This was the only escape in Caernarfonshire where the stays folded down onto the ladder to fit into the old Conwy fire station in the castle walls. CCC 101 converted from WrE to WrT and was allocated from Llandudno to Betws-y-Coed when Llandudno recieved Ford D1114/Carmichael WrL's JEY310/1P. In 1977 a futher Land Rover RP arrived from Carmichael's, OJC285S; and was allocated to Dolgellau seeing FFF 169 reallocated to Pwllheli and CCC 148 went to Blaenau Ffestiniog with FF 8721 (Morwyn y Mynnydd) going to Betws-y-Coed to fit in alongside the Commer WrT. In 1978 two more RP's arrived PEY238S for Caernarfon and seeing Land Rover/Carmichael CCC 128 reallocated to Amlwch and PEY 239S for Bangor seeing Leyland Terrier ET reallocated to Caernarfon as CIU.
Reregistered to KSU 927 in 1988 after a clerical error which resulted in a few appliances being reregistered. KSU 927 was replaced in 1991 by a Land Rover 110/Carmichael L4P H721LJC and then she was shipped abroad to Madeira. One Land Rover eludes me to this day and that is CCC 127 from Portmadoc. Reregistered to KSU 928 and has vanished off the planet.

Wayne. CCC ran from 1956 and all Caernarfonshire County Council vehicles were registered with the unique CCC registrations. It's difficult to pin down a particular reg to a year without viewing logbooks. FF 8721 was circa 1957. Leyland Terrier was NJC789M and was 1973. Replaced a Bedford J/Lomas converted ambulance BJC 666. CCC 127 did go to Benllech after Portmadoc in 1988 and was KSU 946 as you say, typing error on my behalf there.

Hi guys... Hope this info is of help to you reguarding these rare FT/6 Redwing Carmichaels!
I presently own PEY 239S, its under restoration by myself at the moment, just been 1st Regesterd and now Taxed+MoT'd, purchased last Nov 2009 from MEL magnesium company at Swinton, Nr Manchester, I am based in Blackburn, Lancs.
I have also found two other FT/6's which are less than 3 miles apart, from where I bought PEY 239S, they are Reg No. FFF 169 based at Walkden Nr Mcr, and OJC 285S also based at Swinton Nr Mcr.
Alas, FFF 169 is in poor cond, siezed engine, and chassis rot, the other OJC 285S has been stripped out of kit and pump, and will soon become a 'camper' van...

Ivan, Martin, a retained fireman in Dolgellau owned OJC285S. I didn't realise he had sold her on.

Hi Andrew... Yes, that is what its present owner told me, this chap is also an retired SO from Manchester, but he thought as it was very rare, and so would be hard finding parts ect, to restore... He didn't even know if any other's had survived, hence the change into a camper van!
FFF 169 (see photo) as I say which is based less than 3 miles away from OJC 285S, is in bad stste, but restorable, yet again the chap who own's it, also thought his was a sole survivor, again thought part would become an issue, so when its engine seized, and one diff had locked he left it to rot...
This vehicle is one of the two first built, and unlike mine, is built from the series IIa chassis, and is as far as I could see is almost still 'fully' kitted, it just needs someone with the right cash offer to rescue this rare sad little fire engine!

Andrew, how are you after your misfortune in Dolgellau? TEY188L has left the brigade and according to the Exchange & Mart vehicle finder it's Orange. Thought this would've been kept but alas no.

Hi Andrew, all fine, but it took a while thanks for asking. The Rover I'm looking for is 170L a Commando, always looked striking when I was a lot younger with her front mounted pump, de moted I nderstand and ended up pulling a trailer within the brigade.

YEY188L was the first local authority Range Rover/Carmichael L6P to enter service in the UK. Allocated to Holyhead in 1973 for use on Holyhead Mountain where Ford D809/Carmichael WrT MEY708J and Bedford J2/HCB HrT NEY286 found it difficult to climb. Stayed at Holyhead until 1994 when Ford Transit/Saxon L2P L247VJC arrived. Transferred to North Wales FS as a towing vehicle she was replaced in 1998. The term L6P can be used liberally as the provision of the third axle was floating and the wheels did not drive the vehicle but supported the extended chassis.

Thanks Andrew, with the passing of time the reg has obviously passed me. But where is she now does she still exist? If the Land Rover was any thing like the Range Rover they would have eaten their way through rear most tyres, as they would have been fighting the leading axle.

Hello Guys, I own CCC 129 and have done since 1990. CCC 129 is Wrt Escape, a unique vehicle. It has 400 gal, tank, carries a Merryweather Escape. a 30ft Bailey, a short double extension ladder and a hook ladder. It was based at Bangor Station from 1961-1976.

CCC 149 was an ordinary Land Rover L4P issued to Bangor Fire Station in 1964. It was converted to its present form in Gwynedd. These modified Land Rovers were under powered and could hardly climb the slightest gradient! They were bloody hopeless! A true Anglesey brainchild!!

A message for Wayne Davies. Following on from your comment on the 4th July 2010, did you manage to complete a fleet list of vehicles for the Old North Wales brigade? I am interested as I am trying to list all vehicles in the UK which had Carmichael bodies built on them, from 1950 till 2010. At present I have 1570 and am missing some of those from 1950 to 1980's and Airport Crash tenders. Also can anyone please tell me how I can quickly date a Ministry of Defense vehicle from it's registration number?

Lots of info, A few questions for Andrew, Was CCC148 and FF8721 a Land Rover LWB, Carmichael Fwd control vehicle? Also Gordon I think you will find that VOK119s the Land Rover Carmichael Fwd control was UOK119S not 'V'. Anyway keep up the good work. Thanks, I need more input.

CCC 127 I have as going to Benllech after Portmadog. I also have it re- registered as KSU 946 not 928 can you confirm correct registration number please. Finally can you tell me the reg number of the Leyland Terrier CIU and date of build please.
