Yes - this was originally dayglo - as was the Dennis ET at Chester. Both later repainted red though.

I have a picture (somewhere)of both appliances clearly as dayglo (as was the ERF PHP at Crewe) there was also an R Series pump at Ellesmere Port that was the same Dayglo colour. I don't think that they stayed that colour for very long...

Cant say I remember them dayglo either! My friend used to be retained at A1 and he does not remember them dayglo. I remember the 3 pump and HP turnouts to AFA shouts well. 2 pumps, HP and retained pump following. Aah!. ET was good going over Hoole Bridge when you were watching trains (oops give that one away!) the GMC wasn't tall enough to see but the Dennis was something else!

There were no R or S Reg "R"series Dennis's painted day glow nor was the Dennis F49 ET. The ERF SS50 HP JMB 350G at Ellesmere Port and the City of Chester Dennis F108 PHP LFM 673J were both day glow when new.

Guys, I'm not imagining it! I'll try and dig out the photos. Cheshire clearly experimented with dayglo (the ERF PHP...!) I can pretty certainly state that the City of Chester PHP was NEVER dayglo!

In fact Soren - the HP at Ellesmere Port was an SS70 - pretty sure that pics are elsewhere on here.

Just had a quick dig through some of my old notes - You're right about the R series at Ellesmere Port - I'm possibly thinking about an older F series. I remember 2 nearly Identical machines turning up at a Make Up at a fire in Northgate Street when I was a kid (probably about 1976/77) One of the A2 (Ellesmere Port) machines attending was dayglo... The SS85 ERF HP from Deeside also turned up on the make up.

NMA 35P was day-glo when she was at Crewe. reallocated to Warrington where she was day-glo and then repainted red. I have a photo of the PHP at Crewe in day-glo, but the photo is not mine.

Possibly an ex Lancashire appliance ex Widnes running as a reserve at Ellesmere Port? My auntie had a flat by Ellesmere Port bus station and I was a world class sprinter when I heard them turnout! I dont remember a dayglo pump based there regularly. Chesters PHP wasnt dayglo but I am unsure about the ERF PumpHP. They also experimented with all white L4P too just to cloud matters further!

Dennis F49 Emergency Tender HDM743N was certainly in dayglo in 1976 and I have the photo to prove it. I'll see if it is scanable.

It depends on the time period when you saw a particular appliance as to whether it was red or day-glo. I think you would be surprised at the number of appliances Cheshire painted into day-glo, how long they lasted before returning to red is another question.
To save Rob's sanity the appliance at Ellesmere Port in day-glo that he remembers was XMB 497M a Dennis F49, I will post a photo shortly.

Just to confuse things even further, ERF HP - JMB 850G was actually traditional red when it was first delivered, however the cab was rebuilt with the modern ERF style cab/grill/headlamps etc, thus giving the impression of a more modern appliance. It did indeed reappear in the day-glow livery.

Andy - was the cab rebuilt as a two seat cab rather than a crew cab? I have this niggle in my mind that the HP was single cabbed - but all of the pics I can find are of it crew cabbed.

The appliance was recabbed with a single cab. I photographed her at Chester on Cup Final day in 1988, but the slide I had got destroyed in a damp garage without my knowledge.

Yes both LTC402K and LTC403K Fords from Widnes Ex Lancs were true Day Glo, I can't remember CTU452N being Day Glo either...oops having shunted a car with it a long time ago.

About 1973 I was outside Chester Fire Stn as were all the machines.Up comes this chap in a white shirt, no rank markings and starts chatting, the talk turns to appliance colours. The chap was the CFO. For Chester he had gone for the brightest possible red without turning to day glo. The colour certanly photographed very brihtly but it was a true red. From memory the Chief wanted max visability but did not like day glo.

To Glow or not to Day Glow, that is the question. Both Chester's ERF WrL & Dennis F49 ET/CU were both delivered painted from new in 'Day Glow' I know, I was there & drove them both from new.

I drove xmb in 77 and it was day glo..the pink panther..but our erf was better to drive on a shout!!

EX CFB ERF PMA was at Stalybridge and became part of Greater Manchesters fleet in 74, it ended it's days on the driving school, it will be fondly remembered by those who drove it except for the brakes!
