1970's Crown Firecoach Midmount Aerial.
This photograph shows a 1970's Crown/Maxim midmount Aerial Ladder Truck of the Coronado Fire Department situated in southern California just across the bay from San Diego which I photographed back in 1990.I would not normally take pictures of rear ends,but this was a must do on this one.Note the overhang of the Maxim midmount 100ft aerial ladder,also the ground ladders stored in their compartments and the typical flaked hose on the hose bed above.
All in all,a real classic American Fire Truck.

Crown
An excellent shot, which really does show just how different some older rigs were from anything you would see in Europe.
The mid mount aerial was popular for many years for a number of reasons:
1- It was lower than a rear mount, which meant it could fit into the doorways of many older fire stations. FDNY still operates a fleet of mid mount Baker Aerialscope Towers for this reason, as they often have to operate out of firehouses which are 100 or more years old.
2- The lower height reduces the center of gravity, which improves handling.
3- Most of these were 85 footers, and the rear overhang was not quite so challenging as in the case of this 100 foot version. The 85 foot aerial stack lined up more or less with the end of the ground ladder stowage and hose bed.
4- As it turns out, this is a quint, with a pump, tank and hose bed as well as the aerial and ground ladders. The mid mount aerial makes it easier to get at the hose bed than with a rear mount, although of course we now have more sophisticated hose storage solutions to overcome this problem.
