This is what was called a "toast rack", as distinct from a "Braidwood" or a "new World". The toast rack had the crew seat laterally installed behind the front seats, and an open cab. In the 1930s, it was very innovative, but by 1955 all municipal fire engines in the UK were enclosed. But, open cab fire engines were still being acquired in some of the warmer areas of the US until the 1970s. For some reason, I believe most toast racks were pump escapes or escape carriers, but they soon gave way to enclosed appliances after 1936-37.
