Rear view of Oldmeldrums Rescue Pump, a Scania 94d Reg: Y539 RRS. Callsign 741.
Shows the pump bay area and equipment and also the ladders carried. In the middle is the "464" 13.5m ladder. To the left is a short extension and a roofing ladder. To the right is the 9m ladder.
The B.A. entry control board is also contained in the pump bay doors.

The powered racks have been trialed but don't work as well as the gantries do in the scottish climate

thats a fair point but we simply don't have the room and the ones that some services have, have that many problems

They work very well in places such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which have extreme climates, as do many cities here in the US and Canada. They can be powered by hydraulic, electrical or compressed air systems, including fully redundant dual systems.
Perhaps the brigades which have tried them have not investigated what is available from other countries?
Another question is the continuing use of the old-fashioned 13, 5 meter ladder, which is extremely heavy.
New 14 and even 15 meter three-piece extension ladders in daily use in both France and Germany now weigh only 75 KG. This means the temptation to rely on the 9 m ladder because it is so much easier to manhandle is reduced. Indeed, many pumpers with a 14 or 15 m ladder do not even bother to carry the shorter two piece one.
