The 8/18 was an older DIN standard for a light water tender for rural firefighting, mainly operated by volunteer fire companies. A 4X4 chassis was not mandatory, but most were 4X4 for obvious reasons.

The specs called for an 800 LPM pump and an 1800 liter tank, with a three seat cab.

The equipment schedule was fairly comprehensive and included ground ladders, all within a 7.5 ton GVW - so that volunteers who did not have a heavy goods license could still drive them legally.

The 8/18 on the Mercedes 813 chassis was also quite popular, but if the crew wanted to go off-road, nothing would beat a Unimog!
