RYX302 is a Pipe Carrier you can tell by the upright poles on the side. It would not have had hose layer hose as in the picture.

Dave; how did the Pipe Carrier work ?

Something like laying rigid pipe-sections, horizontally from water-source, so that a Pump could 'draft' from a distance, carefully keeping the 'Head' within 20 feet, or so?

I am thinking the Major Disaster scenario, like London Blitz, or, Tokyo earth-quake; where big water-mains get broken under-ground....

Pat it was a very labour intesive thing. the pipe carrier was filled with 6inch PVC and Alloy pipes. These had to be removed by hand and the layed were needed then joined using a spcial copling.The Alloy pipes were also used with other fittings ans made into a pipe bridge to take the pipe line over a road and not impeed traffic.We had one of these pipe carriers at St.Helens Merseyside in my AFS days and used it on many occasions.

I would never have thought of the "Pipe Bridge" over a busy main road idea... the assembly must have something like a giant "Meccano" (Erector) kit.

I suppose today's practice is to simply shut down the main road traffic completely; and detour the traffic safely around, at a good distance.

A few years I saw photos of an alternate method. A 100' ladder with a pre-piped waterway was parked on one side of the highway. The ladder was extended over the width of the highway and raised high enough for traffic to pass inderneath. The nozzle at the tip of the waterway removed and a large diameter hose attached. Just can't remember who did it.

I have just seen one of these in a scrapyard near to where I live. I said to my Brother that I has seen a preserved one in a book. It was at the top of the yard near Cheltenham - Harry Bucklands, Old Cheltenham Road not far from the M5 junction 11?
