Clive what a smashing pump, saw it at Odiham last year where the owner (may have been yourself) was attempting to sell it, later it was to appear on E-Bay. I would have loved it the vehicle was presented immaculate and well cared for. Someone who wanted to own a nice lovely appliance this would be ideal. Sadly for me the asking price ruled me out, it was even fully stowed! I do hope it went to a good home and like so many others does not end up derelict in some yard and ruined.

Being the proud owner of Dennis now I would say yes it went to a good home and yes it is a credit to its former owner the interest that she gets form everywhere it goes is unbelievable Tony Francis

I dont think the blue lights on the roof now are the originals.If my memory is correct the originals had a set of 3 "fins" which made them flash & "glitter" making them highly visible especially at night.They may have been an experimental set by DENNIS.I think a fault on the drive mechanism of the flasher unit could not be rectified & as a result they were changed as seen now by brigade workshops.Peter Boyd the o/ic.at 25 Horndean would be able to furnish you with more details and maybe a photo of the original lights.

Had one of these at Welwyn garden city c1980!Dan thing had a crash box.fortunately I'd been in the force who never discover synchro boxes!! 😉😉

These were built in the workshops of Hampshire not by Dennis.

When I bought this one I was told it was one that was direct from Dennis as workshop were not keeping up with demand the interior was different to workshop ones headlining was not hardwood as workshop built ones were.

Sorry, but the Hampshire Dennis's were built by both Dennis and HFB. Best way to tell the difference is Dennis had a flat roof with the blue lights mounted as shown and HFB had a more curved roof with the lights mounted directly on the roof.

Sorry Michael, this one was a Dennis Guildford bodied D Series. Yes Hampshire did build many but also to cover their replacement programme several were built at Dennis.

Interesting!

I did not know that British fire brigades built their own appliances, although of course we do know about many conversions, rehabs or re purposing efforts by brigade workshops.

Was this a common practice?

Did brigades ever build units for each other?

Why would a firm like Dennis supply a chassis when they had the ability to improve their profits by selling a complete appliance?

When I managed the Leyland DAB bus factory in Denmark we often had chances to sell bare chassis, especially for our (then) unique articulated buses, but we always managed to negotiate our way into selling complete vehicles!
