Fire Engines Photos

A friend of mine owns GYJ 41 and would love a contact name to get some history about his vehicle and possibly obtaining a coat of arms.

Hi Islwyn , the Karrier was originally purchased by Angus Area Fire Brigade and was stationed in Kirriemuir in 1958 and after regionalisation the new Tayside Fire Brigade re-allocated the Gamecock to the volounteer station at Kirkmicheal near Blairgowrie , I have actually been on this appliance and GYJ 40 at incidents , the latter was a spare for a while and was at Glenshee station when the pair and two pumps from Blairgowrie were at a hill fire near the Blacklunanas on the A93 in 1983 , I have no doubt it was at a dundee station when brand new and at afew ather ststions during its service , the now Tayside Fire Ans Rescue still have a Gamecock somewhere , I will try and get a photo , as for the coat of arms or brigade badge I can get a photo to you if you want , hope this is of use , Alan Ramsay (tayside fire and rescue)

I can remember GYJ 40 based at Monifieth in the late 60's and early 1970's.
Housed in a garage opposite the "Panny Hotel" in Princess St. At this time it had bells on it!

Hi Ian I remember it too. It was based at station A10 Monifieth (RtD) but was closed down when station 03 North Balmossie opened in 1982 which replaced the old station A3 in Brown St Broughty Ferry. Wt/Rtd 2 pumps which Blamossie still has plus a prime mover. The station (garage)is still in use today as a small business.

Hi , in addition to the information I have above , it served the last years of its life at Rannoch school where the older kids and some of the masters were rudimentary trained by Tayside fore brigade , when the school closed it was put up for sale , I know it had less than 16000 miles on it when it was used at Glenshee , typical of appliances on Tayside it would have served at 3 or four stations after leaving a wholetime station , I believe it served the vast majority of its 20 plus years at Kirriemuir and Rannoch , serving a couple of years at the other two stations , unfortunately the old records were not kept after the appliance was cast so I have no idea of definatives, Tayside have kept one on its books to use for shows etc it is on here picture 28488 and it indeed has now moved to Dundee transport museum , hopefully this helps

Thank you for the info Alan. The school connection would explain the art work on the coat of arms and in the cab (picture of an engine with its tyres on fire)hha. It still only has 17246 miles on the clock and is very original with ladders search lights radio etc all intact. Renovation is going well made easy with the obvious maintenance from past years.

Thanks again Alan.GYJ40 Is now ready for the road it does need painting but that will have to wait.We have the idea of using it for camping trips with the large crew cab and locker space being ideal (and a large fuel tank) It will be kept totally original though.you may well see it as we will combine shows on our travels.once again thanks Alan.

This appliance used to be owned by someone in the East Lothian area many years ago. I think it was kept at an industrial premises near Gladsmuir along with a few other preserved appliances.

Hi all. Just acquired gyj40 from John. Enjoyed the information on this site. Drove it from sheffield to Withernsea where I live never missed a beat took some getting used to though driving a 4 ton vehicle with 50, S brakes and no sound deadening was quiet an experience but there is something so relaxing driving high up at a max speed of 45 loved it by the time I was driving through HULL.
I would like to restore interior but cant find any photo, s can anyone help regards Carl Richards

Hi Carl shes quite a machine int she..Missing her..Think a B A set in middle of driver and passenger..one ether side of driver and passenger..never found out what the ZS49 is but assume its the radio call sign..ps look after her ..if ever you need any info or help give me a buzz...do what I can to help...Regards John.

Thanks John just building her a temporary garage from machine mart had to added additional height to get her in but these tent like garage should keep weather out over winter.As have to wait for summer to Raise my garage to cope with ladders and engine .have got builder fitting a 14 ft inspection pit inside garage so I can work underneath without laying on back .She went to her first show with me to a place called welwick even though there where steam engines classic cars and trucks penny was a favourite while we where there .A friend who lives about 2 miles away has 6 dennis engines and advised me to buy a reversing camera as he said often people will just not move when he was reversing so have bought a camera and remote screen so as not to spoil originality .This will make you laugh as I left yours it started raining so I turned on my wiper about 2miles later it fell away lost to traffic found a place to pull in and removed passenger and fitted it to my side it was all good after that .passed a car on fire on m1 fire brigade there putting it out as I passed they waved I put bells on for them grandson loves it.

Doing research on my family and looking into the local part time fire service which my grandfather was with, Engine GYJ40 was based in Monifieth for a period. This info is taken from the details supplied on the Balmossie Station site
