Fire Engines Photos

Great to see a photo of this as I remember it on the run for quite a long time in my home town of Buckingham but sadly it had gone off the run before I got into photography. Nice City of Oxford Plaxton Paramount coach in the background too!

I'm looking for photos of Buckingham's other appliances from the 1990s if anyone can oblige: there was a Dennis SS (G458 UBW), a Dodge (CVV 546X) and a Renault Midliner (M886 RWL - I know this one is now preserved).

Does anyone have a list of Bucks GMCs and which stations they were at? I was at Amersham and we had to use one of these things but cannot remember for the life of me what the reg. # was! It may have been this pump. Is this possibly the back of Beaconsfield? They also had a GMC but they had a newer one in the day-glo orange livery, black bonnet and strobes.

I saw F312 HWL just a couple of weeks ago returning from a fair at Wooburn Green, trying to get in touch with the owner to find out where to see again and the history of it.

Mark Harris I have just read your comment about seeing a GMC coming away from woburn fête I can confirm that the one you saw was f313 hwl as my uncle has just finish a full restoration on it.

Thank you for letting me know about the GMC and the Leyland. I'm sorry I didn't get to see your comments sooner but don't think I had any notifications on this thread, if that is possible.

I had a look at Roger Mardon's site and he has thh GMC (F313 HWL) as being on the run at Buckingham. We had that Leyland for a few days when the GMC was in workshops. That was quite a nice pump.

Does your uncle still have them and where will they be displayed next?

I agree, they seem an odd choice for a rural county in the UK, with their long wheelbase and crew cabs. They are used in the US as brush pumpers, but usually without a crew cab - and are limited to a 1500 liter tank with room only for a minimal equipment load.

They also show up as light rescues, but are once again unable to carry any extensive list of equipment.

Considered to be "minis" here, they are still quite long for Buckinghamshire rural road conditions. In fact, their 3.3 meter wheelbase was just as long as a Dennis F28 water tender, which could be considered a "full size" British appliance.

If the brigade really needed 4X4s, the Bedford R series (as used by the AFS among others) was the same length on a 4.0 meter wheelbase and had a much more convincing off-road performance. The chassis could carry between 1600 and 4000 liters, depending on the bodywork, and the units with the smaller tanks had tons of crew and locker space.

They may also have used less fuel, too!
