Martin'sCreek Apts Summerville,SC fire

02122009 Apartment house fire .This took 3 engines and two aerial trucks to stop. We had to handlay the 5 inch line in to the truck for the water supply. If you look just above the stream you can see the basket lights of the other truck which was doing ventilation. This is a 2002 Sutphen 100 foot aerial tower with a 2000 gpm Hale single stage pump and a 300 gallon tank. It melted the lenses on the side closest to the fire. The other truck is a 2006 E-One 95 foot aerial platform with a 2000 gpm Hale single stage and 500 gallon tank. There were no lives lost or injured in this call.

Nice work!

This photo demonstrates two key principles of effective firefighting, without any added commentary.

1 - Get in close, but not too close!

2 - Forget what has already burned, and is going to be a loss whatever anyone does, just focus on preventing the fire from spreading.

As an aside to those in countries which do not use five inch (125 mm) hose, I would just mention that it will move all 2000 US gallons (over 7000 LPM) that these aerials can pump, if the hydrant is within around 50 meters from the pump inlet - and as long as the hydrant itself can produce this much flow.

Lesser flows, such as for a standard 1500 GPM (5500 LPM)pumper, can be accomplished over distances of up to around 100 meters, depending of course on mains pressure.

While a few US fire departments still use suction hoses for hydrant hookups, almost all use five inch flexible hose. This was originally introduced into the US by Angus Fire Armor, a British firm, but was never adopted in the UK because hydrant capacities are much too limited for it to be necessary or useful. Most US pumpers carry between 150 and 300 meters, depending on local factors including hydrant capacities and distancing.

The only European country to make extensive use of large diameter hose for hydrant supply is France, where 110 mm hoses are quite often used. Even so, many times twin 65 mm delivery hoses are deployed, and many lower capacity hydrants do not have a 110 mm outlet.

As mentioned though, it is a tough item to hand lay, and is usually paid out of the pumper's hose bed just like the old fashioned hose layer lorries used to...
